Texas music = Doug Sahm. The original Texas Groover. He was making the scene at Soap Creek and the ‘dillo before even Willie repatriated from Nashville. Not many other people in HG area knew about Sir Doug. Except Gene Gandy, who had as deep a musical knowledge of anyone I ever knew. And that includes the folks at KNON that I used to work with on the Friday gig. GG had all the Doug Sahm albums.
I recall hanging out w Doug, Ponty Bone and Flaco Jimenez in the back of the Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum. Magic. I knew the owners and we finally drifted out at 4 am.
